STEM Project Competition – Southeast Asian STEM Education Fair and Exposition 2023

The SEAMEO Regional Centre for STEM Education (SEAMEO STEM-ED) respectfully requests your kind support to promote the regional “STEM Project Competition” to secondary school students and teachers in your networks. The Centre is organizing the competition as part of the Southeast Asian STEM Education Fair and Exposition (SEA STEM Fair & Expo) 2023 to enhance the problem-solving skills of youth in applying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) knowledge to solve real problems that they face in everyday life or those faced by their communities, schools, or industries.

The competition is open to school students (including non-formal education), vocational and technical education students, and university students (undergraduate level), up to age 18, from SEAMEO member countries.

We are accepting STEM project entries until 27 January 2023.

The competition and STEM Fair posters are attached to this email for your reference and utilization. The information about the competition and the STEM Fair can also be accessed through the links below.

SEAMEO STEM-ED sincerely appreciates your kind support and looks forward to receiving interest from teams of students and schools in your networks.

About the STEM and Competition
STEM competition is organized to enhance the problem-solving skills of individuals using science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The competition allows students (with the teacher’s supervision) to identify one STEM-related problem or challenge and propose, build/develop, as well as present a solution.

Submission Period

Competition Open : October 1, 2022 – January 27, 2023
Review of Entries : End of January 2023
Notification of Entry Status/Finalists : February 3, 2023

Target

This STEM Education competition targeted three groups of students from the SEAMEO member countries ─ which are up to age 18 school students (i.e., grades 6/7-12, including non-formal education students); vocational and technical education students; and university students (undergraduate level).

*Winners will present their projects at the expo

Date: Friday, 10 March 2023
Time: To be announced
Location: Bangkok, Thailand (Pullman Bangkok King Power Hotel)

Guidelines
After identifying one STEM-related problem or challenge (that can be solved with a budget of $300 USD or less), students will propose, build, develop and test a solution to their problems.

For the problem or challenge identified students must:

  • Apply scientific investigation
  • Integrate an engineering design practice with a supporting test
  • Demonstrate the use of research and/or data collection and analysis to find out more about the problem
  • Demonstrate how STEM is used or related to solving the problem
  • Provide a prototype or model (a prototype is a “full-size” working representation of the solution to the problem or challenge. A model is often a “smaller” detailed non-working representation of the solution to the problem or challenge and is used to illustrate how the problem or solution could be solved)
  • Prepare a short presentation about the project solution (photographs and/or videos are encouraged)

Benefits

  • Engage and connect with professionals, community, and industry experts
  • Exposed to entrepreneurship
  • Enhance communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creative thinking skills
  • Enrich STEM knowledge and education
  • Showcase and recognition of your work
  • Exposed to civic and entrepreneurship mindsets

* All entries will be assessed by a group of STEM experts; each category will receive 10 awards for each student group.

About Fair and Expo

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Education 2030 is on a mission to build a common understanding of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary to shape the future towards 2030. The organisation recognizes the vital role education plays and how it will assist the youth to acquire competencies that will contribute to their individual and collective well-being, and ultimately in changing world ─ identified as “transformative competencies”. In this regard, the youth need to be empowered and encouraged to take initiatives and actions that will increase well-being and sustainability for themselves, others, and the planet. The OECD Education 2030 project also urges educators to engage students in solving local and global problems arising from the exacerbation of globalization.

In support of the OECD Learning Framework 2030, SEAMEO STEM-ED in collaboration with SEAMEO members has initiated a new programme called the “Southeast Asian STEM Education Fair & Exposition 2023”. The Programme is tasked to provide a platform for Southeast Asian young learners, educators, policymakers, and stakeholders (from communities and industries across the region) to create, support, and improve learning environments ─ by engaging the youth to solve and address real-world problems and daily life challenges.

The platform will also allow educators to share best practices related to the implementation of STEM Career Academies (a Chevron Enjoy Science II sponsored programme established to motivate students in pursuing higher education and developing professional careers). Nonetheless, by engaging with their communities and employers in the programme, the youth will develop essential competencies to become the next generation of graduates who will be better at contributing to the sustainable development of Southeast Asia.
