SEAMEO CELLL visited Binh Khanh Secondary School

At the end of December, the SEAMEO CELLL working group, led by Dr. Le Thi My Ha – Center Director – led a meaningful trip to visit Binh Khanh Secondary School, located in Binh Khanh commune, Can Gio district, Ho Chi Minh City. The trip aimed to research the current status of teaching and assessment according to the school’s 2018 General Education Program. At the same time, SEAMEO CELLL also set the task of learning about the living conditions of teachers and students in Can Gio district, a special area with many students from difficult backgrounds.

The trip not only helps the Center better understand the school’s successes and difficulties in applying the 2018 General Education Program locally, but is also an opportunity for SEAMEO CELLL to survey challenges and opportunities in promoting a comprehensive learning environment for students. SEAMEO CELLL has exchanged information and experience to support the school and contribute to improving and developing the quality of educational training in this locality.

Of the total 1,379 students, 711 come from poor households and face many challenges in accessing high-quality education. Faced with that situation, the government and schools invest in spacious facilities, creating favorable conditions and arousing children’s interest in learning. This is an opportunity not only to share love but also for SEAMEO CELLL to contribute to creating better learning conditions for young souls.

Modern facilities

The school is not only a place to provide knowledge but also a place to create a suitable environment for students’ well-rounded development. With a library equipped with modern computers, a green biological garden, and a sports playground, this is where learning knowledge is combined with practical experience. What is special is the large learning space with an area of up to 13,267m2, with green trees and functional areas, helping the school organize many activities and movements. This not only helps create a safe environment but also promotes creativity and discovery for students.

Comprehensive development goal

Binh Khanh Secondary School not only focuses on imparting knowledge but also sets the goal of comprehensive development for students. Through extracurricular activities and supplementary courses, the school creates opportunities for students to develop life skills, improve autonomy and creative thinking.

Support difficult students

With more than half of the students coming from financically deprived households, the school is not only a place to provide knowledge but also a second family, a place to share difficulties and encourage development. Scholarship support programs and charitable activities are continuously deployed to ensure that no one is left behind.

Current status of teaching and assessment according to the 2018 General Education Program

Binh Khanh Secondary School is making every effort to improve the quality of teaching and assessment towards innovation and creativity. Some notable points are the increase in innovation in teaching methods, to promote positivity, initiative, creativity, and practice self-study methods of students. This includes applying information technology in teaching and adjusting teaching methods according to the guidance of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training.

In particular, 100% of teachers innovate teaching methods according to the characteristics of each subject and apply information technology in teaching, while maintaining flexible online teaching on the k12.online platform in response to the actual situation. This not only helps enhance students’ self-research skills but also creates favorable conditions for assessing and developing learner capacity.

However, the state of degraded facilities and lack of teaching equipment is a challenge. Some students still do not have the awareness to research lessons on their own, and this is considered a major limitation. To solve this problem, Mr. Truong Huu Phuoc – Principal – proposed specific solutions such as increasing recommendations to superiors to provide teaching equipment, mobilizing resources from the school and the community, and using contributed funds and sponsors to buy new equipment.

Furthermore, to overcome the situation where students do not have a sense of self-studying lessons, the school proposes to strengthen testing and punish students who have not raised their awareness of self-study in studying lessons on their own. This emphasizes the importance of defining personal responsibility in the learning process and promoting students’ comprehensive development.

Binh Khanh Secondary School is aiming for a diverse and positive learning environment; however, consensus and support from the community is still needed to ensure that all students have equal opportunities to access and obtain knowledge.
