Key Principles and Methods of Teaching Adult Learners Online
1. Background
Lifelong learning is growing trend in modern society, where transformations are taking place with increasing frequency, new knowledge is created at an increasing rate, and life consequently needs to change in order to adapt to the new living and working environment. This entails great support from adult education, a core component of lifelong learning.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused upheavals in life, which changed people’s working and learning methods, as well as prompted “a crisis in human resource development”. Online learning, initiated in the late 1980s at Phoenix University and adopted later by many universities and institutions, yet never becoming a mainstream in education, has quickly become a mode of instruction and mass learning within just one year into the pandemic. According to a Udemy special report, online enrolment in Spain increased by 280%, in India by 200%, and in Italy by 320%.
Online teaching and learning provides various benefits – fee reduction, learning everywhere, learning on demand, lower travel costs – but it is also a challenge for the education sector, especially in designing curricula and teaching. Currently, most teachers in Southeast Asia have been trained only in pedagogy, which is suitable for young students in physical classroom. This lack of appropriate methods and skills for conducting online classes for adults forces teachers to try new ways on their own.
For this reason, SEAMEO CELLL organizes this regional training workshop for adult teachers.
2. Details
The two-day online training uses Google Meet and Google Classroom to facilitate the attendance of teachers from other countries in the region; this training also serves as an illustration of the online adult teaching method on the mentioned platforms. The instructors are lecturers in the field of andragogy and online education from the University of Chulalongkorn, Thailand.
The training program consists of a theoretical and an exercise session. A Certificate of completion signed by SEAMEO CELLL and the instructors is issued by SEAMEO CELLL to participants who successfully completed the online assessment.
